Recently our Unit 4 Biology ventured into the city to GTAC (Gene Technology Access Centre) to use a range of DNA manipulation techniques and technology to identify the strain of influenza that had infected a community. Students were required to perform Polymerase Chain Reaction in order to amplify a sample of DNA in order to be able to carry out the required tests. Gel Electrophoresis was then undertaken in order to separate the strands of DNA to identify which strand was causing the flu outbreak. Students then applied this knowledge back at school in their SAC task.”
