Principal Report

Welcome back to Term 2!  I hope everyone had an enjoyable Easter and holiday break. It is great to see all our students back sharing the excitement with their friends and getting back into the flow of the school day.

I would like to welcome to the College, Mrs Kara Salmon who has joined the Mathematics Department.  She will be working with Mrs Curciev, who returned from leave at the beginning of Term 2.

$7 MILLION FOR MOOROOLBARK COLLEGE

One Monday I was delighted to have received a phone call from Minister James Merlino, Deputy Premier and Minister for Education, to congratulate the school community on the $7,000,000 allocated to Mooroolbark College for capital works in the State Budget to be announced for facilities improvement.

This is not a “promise” but an actual amount allocated to the College.

At this stage, the conditions for spending of this amount are unknown, however, the Mooroolbark College Council will be working with the Victorian School Building Authority to determine which buildings are most in need of replacement.  The $7 million is for capital works and not maintenance funding, which I can assure our community will result in great new learning spaces for our students. The consultation with our community will start very shortly.

This is the first significant capital works funding the College has received since the Technology grant in the 1990s, which resulted in the construction of T Block.

ATHLETICS DAY

On Monday 30th April, we enjoyed a wonderful day at the annual Inter House Athletics Carnival.  We again had an amazing turn out of students who enjoyed a day of racing, competition and games.

Congratulations to Lachie Mann who ran a great day for our students.

ANZAC DAY

We held our annual ANZAC Day General Assembly on Tuesday 24th April, this has become an important part of our calendar.  I would like to congratulate our students on the reverence they showed throughout the assembly and thank our College Concert Band for playing both the Australian and New Zealand national anthems.

Additional to this our College Captains spoke at the Bimbadeen Heights Primary School ANZAC Day Assembly, with Jason Kennedy a graduate of Bimbadeen Heights Primary School playing the last post at both events. Jason did a wonderful job.

On the 25th April, our Middle School Captains attended the Lilydale dawn service, laying a wreath on behalf of the College and our Senior School Captains laid a wreath at the midday service in Mooroolbark. Tiani Welch – Phillips also gave the young person’s address at this ceremony.  We were very proud of the address given by Tiani.

TASSIE AND CENTRAL CAMP

Thank you to all the staff who went on the Tassie Tour at the end of Term 1.

To begin, special thanks goes to Jodie Tilley and Janet Whitby, who as tour leaders organised an outstanding trip for our students.  Thank you also to the following staff who attended the tour:  Andrew Dingey, Claire Jones, Chris Hanneberry, Stephanie Bell, Jiaqi Tan, Gillian Loft, Todd Zarebski, Joshua Knott, Eva Woodward and Alex Scott.  It was lovely to see the healthy competition between the two tour groups to see who could get the most Facebook likes on the many fantastic events along the way.

We also have a number of staff who accompanied our students on the Central Tour.  Thanks to Tracey Lackman and Naomi Van Bremen for leading the tour.  Thank you also to John Nichol, Zac Parr, Belinda Cannington, Jiaqi Tan, Jev Telford and Sarah Rosendale for attending and providing such a wonderful experience for the students.

After both camps I was contacted by individuals and organisations to comment on the exceptional behaviour of the Mooroolbark College students.

TAFFIC SAFETY - CHANGES TO THE NORTHERN/MANCHESTER RD CARPARK

During Term 1, the College Council approved changes to parking and student pick-ups and drop offs at the College.

The northern car park will be closed in approximately 4 weeks time during morning drop off and afternoon pick up.  Boom gates are currently being installed which will require staff to use their Mooroolbark College staff card to enter during morning and afternoon peak times.

During this time parents will not be able to drop off or pick up their children in the northern car park and will be required to drop off or pick up outside the College grounds.  This is in line with the advice provided from DET to maximise student safety.

Currently having a large number of cars entering and leaving the College, pedestrian traffic and buses all at the same location causes significant safety issues for our students.

We are currently working with the Shire of Yarra Ranges in regards to traffic management in the local area and their response has been positive.  We hope to have changes to traffic and parking regulations in Ross Pincott Drive in the near future.  During the holidays, the Shire has replaced and moved the bus stop on Manchester Rd to increase safety.

New steps have also been installed from behind the ECA to Ross Pincott Drive.  I encourage students to use this to access the school and leave rather than crossing near the staff car park on Ross Pincott Drive.  It is a far safer option and maximises visibility for drivers.

National Assessment Program—Literacy and Numeracy NAPLAN

National Assessment Program—Literacy and Numeracy NAPLAN

The National Assessment Program-Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) test for Years 7 and 9 students will be held on Tuesday May 15, 2018 (Language and Writing), Wednesday May 16, 2018 (Reading) and Thursday May 17, 2018 (Numeracy). It is essential that your child brings a calculator for the numeracy tests on Thursday May 17.

The results of the tests provide diagnostic information for parents/ guardians and teachers about your child’s performance in Literacy and Numeracy. It is imperative that your child is at school for all testing sessions. Any students absent on the day of a test will be given a catch-up test on Friday 18th May. This information can be used to support teaching and learning programs and improve students’ achievement.

Later in the year, you will receive your child’s personal report.  The report will give a snapshot of your child’s particular skills in reading, writing, language conventions and numeracy. The report will also show how your child performed in relation to national minimum standards. These describe minimum acceptable standards for students across Australia.

For more information about the tests, please visit the VCCA website at www.vcaa.vic.edu.au or the NAP website at www.nap.edu.au

I wish to thank Mr Matthew Donald and Ms Christina Gibsonfor their work in organising the 2018 NAPLAN.  It is an incredible organisational task, with over 450 students having to do the 5 assessment tasks in a week. I also want to thank Naomi Van Bremen for their work in coordinating the logistics for the week. It is a complex task and their efforts are appreciated.

ANGUS FERN

SCHOOL CAPTAIN 2018

What do you hope to achieve this year in your role?

Personally, I would love to develop my organisational skills and become more assertive.

Tiani and I are hoping to continue to make the school such a positive place by enhancing an atmosphere of participation and teamwork, striving for excellence.

Who is a leader that you admire and why do you admire them?

A leader that I admire is Josh Kennedy (Sydney Swans captain), he is someone that is able to organise a strong group of players despite outside noise. He is also able to get the most out of his players by ensuring they play their role. He is also able to set a strong example on and off the field.

What are some of your goals for the future?

I would love to attend university and study something I enjoy. I would also like to travel and see the fantastic world we live in.

 Final sentence for readers.

I am really looking forward to getting the most out of this year and getting to know as many people as possible along the way.

Open Night 2018

Open Night 2018

We conducted our annual college Open Night on the 26th of April and again it was a fantastic showcase of what is most important about our school – the people! It always impresses and motivates me when I see so many of our current students happily supporting and promoting this college that we are so very proud of. We had in excess of 150 students willingly support various programs to ensure yet again our Open Night was a big success. Of course, our staff always bring an energy and passion to the night and this year was no exception. Numerous ex-students floated through on evening, which was great to see and symbolic of the positive experience they shared with us.

Also a big thanks to the PTCA for their ongoing support of our college and again providing refreshments at the conclusion to the evening.

Maths Forum

Maths Forum

Our passionate Mathematics Leaders, Mr James Taylor (Key Learning Area Head) and Mr Zach Par (Numeracy Leader) ran a very informative session to our Year 7 Parent community. They tackled topics on what is happening in the Year 7 Maths classes including OET's and Essential Assessment and how parents can best support their child's growth in Mathematics. Forming cohesive relationships with our parents is key to improve student growth and confidence.  We would like to thank the parents and Mr Taylor and Mr Parr for their time at this event. The College looks forward to working with our Parents in supporting their children in their educational journey over the next 5 years.

Science: Turtles

Science: Turtles

It has been an exciting month for Science! Not only have we settled in our new turtle friends, they now have their long awaited names. Thanks to all the votes on our Facebook page and from our wider Mooroolbark community on Open Night. Therefore, without further ado we formally welcome Sheldon and Franklin.

The turtles have created much interest amongst the students; on a daily basis, we have many visitors to the Science foyer who come to say a friendly hello. Each week the turtles are weighed and measured as we track their health. Students are recording this data on the turtle noticeboard, which will soon be translated to graphs to link in with relevant Math’s concepts the students are learning.

The turtles would also like to thank their special Turtle Ambassadors who look after them so well each day. They are Turtley Amazing!

Year 10 Central Australia Camp

Year 10 Central Australia Camp

While everyone was enjoying their sleep-ins on the school holidays, 87 Year 10 students turned up to school at 5.30am in their Blue or Pink outfits ready to begin their Central Australia Tour with day one’s theme being a Battle of the Sexes Tournament. Every day had a different theme and the nights were filled with activities. Our famous Blind Date Night was a hit once again, seeing ‘Janice’ and Mr Nichol discuss the ways both ladies and gentlemen should behave on a date. At first glance, many see long bus trips as a deterrent. The staff and students on the other hand made the most of their time on the bus and played games such as Pictionary, stretch the snake, frog toss and Scategories to pass the time on the long stretches of road. Aside from travelling through Central Australia on an amazing trip, a key focus was making the students more aware of what was around them and understanding how doing small things can create big changes, and surviving life means moving around until they find their niche to thrive in.

We had a 24-hour period where there were no phones or electronic devices. This was well received and meant the students could take in the beautiful gorges, which we explored during the day. Some students said the best part of camp was when they couldn’t talk out of respect for the Indigenous culture during the Kata Juta walk. Others said having no phone meant actually walking around exploring the rock faces.

Every year we hold an auction to raise money to support the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS). Families and staff donated items such as giant cookies, dilly bags, toothbrushes and ‘vintage’ camp T-shirts for the auction. RFDS have come to our aid a number of times over the years and without them, our camps would not run as well as they do. The students showed a true appreciation for what the RFDS does for remote communities and this year the group raised a whopping $3314.70. I look forward to contacting RFDS regarding the 2018 donation.

Although there was an overnight invasion at our camp on our second last night, I was very pleased with how all students responded to the event and they should be extremely proud of how they all grouped together and got around anyone affected by the incident. The hero of the camp was Mr Telford who demonstrated that a hero does not need a cape. Just courage and quick reflexes to pull on some pants and chase invaders away.

We thank you Mr Telford!

Year 9 Tasmania Tour 2018

Year 9 Tasmania Tour 2018

We have just arrived back from yet another wonderful Year 9 Tassie Tour, which was a huge success.

The students learnt about our convict-past, spending a day at Port Arthur Convict Settlement. The evening Ghost Tour was a highlight, scaring many of the students. They loved every terrifying minute of it!

The mansion at Riverfront was the spookiest place to stay, with several students reporting noises in the night! Mrs Whitby and Mrs Tilley were very interested in the reports from one villa in particular, which has a history, of creepy, unexplained noises in the night!

We received immediate feedback from our photos on the College Facebook page. A competitive spirit soon developed between Group A and Group B, with an unfair advantage to Group B (according to Mrs Whitby and Mrs Tilley) because Mr Hanneberry (who appears to be a professional photographer) was on Group B.

 Other highlights included:

- The Lion feeding, using meat held in kitchen tongs and the Zoodoo safari, with lots of screams and hysteria during the animals’ feeding time!

- The Tahune Airwalk and Eagle Glider, where the students got to experience Tasmania’s beautiful Tahune Forest, on the banks of the Huon River.

- The monkeys in Launceston City Park and the Cataract Gorge chairlift.

- The spectacular Mole Creek Caves and glow worms.

- The Remarkable Cave and blow hole.

We would like to thank the wonderful staff who gave up their time to help make this Tour such a success - Mr Andrew Dingey and Mr Chris Hanneberry (Leaders, Group B), Ms Claire Jones, Ms Stephanie Bell, Ms Jiaqi Tan, Ms Gillian Loft, Ms Eva Woodward, Mr Todd Zarebski, Mr Alex Scott and Mr Josh Knott.

We also wish to congratulate the students for helping make it an enjoyable experience for all and for their excellent behaviour, maintaining our perfect record of the best camp at Mooroolbark College! We received several compliments from the Tassie Staff at various venues!

World’s Greatest Shave

World’s Greatest Shave

On Tuesday 20th March, Tracey Lackman and Nicola Johnson-Clark were brave enough to shave their heads. They have been raising money for the Leukaemia Foundation World’s Greatest Shave since early February. Together they have raised over $4000! This provides items such as free transport for people who are too ill to drive after chemotherapy treatment, or to give a regional family a free place to stay close to treatment in the city for one week.

It was great to see participants cheered on during the shave, donations of spare change given on the day and donations online in the lead up to the shave. Money collected from student’s buying clear piercings and money raised on the Year 10 Central Camp to shave a Mohawk in Miss Lackman’s hair were also added to the donations.

Further donations are still welcome for both participants as they continue to support such a great cause.
