Captain Profile

Captain Profile

JAYAN HARTWICK  - GREEN HOUSE CAPTAIN

What do you hope to achieve this year in your role?
As a Captain, I hope to be able to influence my peers to embrace their individuality and to assist and encourage each student to use their voice within our community.  I also want to have a better relationship with everyone in Green House and be someone that is approachable to others. I want my role as a captain to be a way to help others build their confidence and feel safe at school.

Who is a leader you admire and why do you admire them?
A leader that I admire is Malala Yousafzai.  Malala was only 15 when the Taliban shot her for her activism for women to attend school. Malala is a prominent activist for the right to an education and is a strong female figure that proves that no matter what your circumstance your voice, your right and your life does matter.

What are some of your goals for the future?
After school, I want to study at Monash University in the area of Global Studies and Law to become a human rights lawyer, specialising in third world countries. I aim to study abroad for a year to gain knowledge of other cultures. My main goal is to be in a line of work, which aims to improve the living standards for everyone.

Final sentence for readers.
We are all incredibly lucky to live in a country where education is available to us, make the most of your time at school and do not be afraid to be yourself. There is more to life than popularity.

Swimming Carnival

On Monday 18th February, the College hosted its annual Swimming Sport Carnival at Croydon Memorial Pool. The students flooded into the pool in a sea of blue, green, red and yellow. Participation was at an all-time high with activities for everyone to join in and earn points for their respective houses. The walking lane was similar to peak hour traffic with students moving from one end of the pool to the next and the year level water polo matches demonstrated outstanding skill and sportsmanship.

I would like to give a big thank you to Mr Nichol and Mr Ryan for their efforts at the Novelty Pool, giving the students an opportunity to sing and dance whilst enjoying the sunshine. In the pool, we had plenty of students competing in the events and winning hard-earned points for their house. At the end of the day and after the points were tallied, I would like to congratulate Mr Bell and Yellow House for taking out another Swimming Sport title. Congratulations to the students who won individual events or qualified for the school relay team. They will be competing at the Maroondah Division Swimming Carnival on Monday 18th March.

Year 12 VCE Start Up Day 2019

Year 12 VCE Start Up Day 2019

On Friday 8th February, 75 Year 12s spent a valuable skill and team building day at Baptist Church in Mooroolbark. The day started by getting to know each other even better with some fun speed dating questions. We then were lucky enough to hear from two 2018 Year 12 students (Nicola Johnson-Clarke who is heading to America to work at Camp America and Angus Fern who got into his preferred course - Bachelor of Business) who gave us an insight into their Journeys from the start of 2018 to now.  The ever-energetic Mr Andy Uren then lifted the energy with some outstanding team building games, helping us see what a team we have! We then had two fantastic sessions from ‘Elevate’ regarding Study Skills and Time Management.  These session will be invaluable in helping us achieve our goals in 2019.  We finished the day by hearing about Pathways and the importance of MIPS sessions and researching Tertiary courses now (if we are heading this way).  Finally we found out, (from the amazing Mr John Nichol), through the game of Evolution, what the most important thing of all is – we are all here to support each other and do our best no matter what happens.  Thanks to all and good luck in 2019!

Year 7 Forest Edge Camp 2019

Year 7 Forest Edge Camp 2019

Beautiful sunny skies greeted us again as 196 Year 7s joined 20 Staff to venture off to the beautiful Forest Edge camp in Neerim East. After a twisty and turning bus ride, we arrived keen and eager to get involved in some fun activities and get to know some of our peers a little better.

Students had the opportunity to tackle high ropes course, a monster 300m long flying fox, river sledding, raft building, trampolining, mountain boarding, bushwalking and a popular new addition being the water slide.

A key theme of the camp was to embrace being part of Mooroolbark College and that there are no limits on what we can achieve as a group. Great schools need students and staff working together, which is one of the key aims of this camp – to help build positive relationships not only between peers but also with staff and students.

Overall, the students presented themselves really well, with the large majority consistently presenting with a friendly, co-operative and well-mannered approach.

A huge thankyou to the following staff who gave up time away from their own families to give our students a terrific camp experience:-  Ms Sund, Mr Parr, Mr Mann, Ms Grey-Smith, Mr Van Keulen, Ms Cannington, Ms Silver, Ms Hubben, Mr Unland, Ms Lant, Mr Donald, Mr U’ren, Mr Martin, Ms Wilson, Ms Crea, Ms Dalboni, Mr Nichol, Mrs Van Der Ende and it was wonderful to have ex-student, Jordan Roth volunteer his time.
