Year 9
Year 9 at Mooroolbark College provides opportunities for students to pick from a range of elective subjects for the first time. This is where students can really blossom and spread their wings into areas of their interest and choice.
Students will study core subjects of Art, English, Mathematics, Science, Health, World of Work and Physical Education each semester. They must also choose on elective unit from each of the Technology and Humanities area. The remaining electives can be chosen from any of the Key Learning Areas.
Opportunity to become a Middle School Captain is also a major role students can apply for, to develop their leadership qualities prior to entering into their senior studies.
Tasmania Tour is the year level camp operated a Year 9, which is usually run early in the year to allow students to bond with a range of peers. Students discover some the natural and unnatural icons of Tasmania over the course of five days. Looking into the past the present uses of many landmarks across the state, students return with many fond memories and experiences.
NAPLAN testing is conducted during Year 9 to determine Reading, Writing, Language Conventions and Numeracy. In addition to this testing, regular student reports and parent/teacher interviews are conducted across the year to allow for constant feedback between the College and your family on how your son or daughter are faring.

Students budget and plan an Outdoor Ed programme in semester 1 to develop team building and leadership qualities through a range of activities such as; Commando Course, Rock Climbing, Mountain Biking, Surfing, Kayaking, Windsurfing, Bush walking, Sailing, Laser strike, Dark zone, Orienteering.
Students also help in the local inter schools athletics carnival officiating in arrange of athletics events, and in the local primary Hoop Time basketball competitions.
The course also incorporates some accredited qualification; Level 1 First Aid, AFL umpiring (with the option to Umpire the Oz kick at the MCG and Ethiad stadium during the AFL season), athletics official in Track, Field and Throws, Bronze Medallion, and Melbourne Rebels Tag Rugby official (most of these qualifications allowing students to achieve a payed officiating or life guard job at the end of the course)
During semester 2 students undertake community service in the local primary schools, running sports programmes and athletics programmes, allowing the students to demonstrate the skills they have learnt and develop earlier in the course.
The conclusion of the course will allow students to improve their communication, organisation, leadership, self esteem, assertiveness, and team work skills, as well as gaining some universally recognised qualifications that they can take with them into the work place.
