Principal Report

Farewell to Jeff Loh
This week we have sadly said goodbye to Mr Jeff Loh. Jeff has been a valued teacher at Mooroolbark College teaching Mandarin for the past 3 years.  Jeff started the program with three Year 7 classes and it has grown in 2017 to being a popular subject at Years 7, 8 and 9.  Jeff’s enthusiasm and dry wit will be missed by staff and students alike.  We wish him all the best.

Winter ConcertOn Monday 14th August, I was fortunate to attend the annual Winter Music Concert.  It was a wonderful night with performances from all music styles and our performers came from all year levels.   Particular thanks goes to the P.T.C.A. who provided refreshments for students, parents and friends.  I wish to recognise the work of Lisa Gaudion who working with Jordan Van Keulen and the instrumental teachers ensured our students had an outstanding experience.

Students would have noticed that the ‘old’ Common Room has been boarded up since the start of Term 3.  Work has started on the conversation to change the space into a multi purpose room.  When it is opened it will be a venue that will cater for assemblies, meetings, drama productions and musical performances.  It is definitely a space with many opportunities for our students. The multi purpose room will seat 100 in tiered seating and another 200 seated on level area.  Next will come the plastering of the walls and the installation of the chairs.  We are currently finalising the multimedia requirements for the area.  The plan is to have it up and running early in Term 4.

At the College Council meeting on Tuesday night, the decision was made to change the footwear uniform requirements for 2018.  The only approved footwear will be a publishable school shoe.  This means that any form of runner or sports shoe will no long be acceptable.  This is to ensure a consistent and equitable approach for all students.

I would also like to remind students from Year 7 – 9 in 2017 the College school bag is the only approved bag.  It is wonderful to see so many students with the school bag.  The school bag was introduced for occupational health and safety reasons.  It is important that Mooroolbark College students are recognisable and use a bag that is ergonomically appropriate for students.  It worries me when I see students caring bags which could injure their bodies.

Earlier this year a change was made to allow Year 11 and 12 students to wear a white shirt and the school tie (in place of the school polo).  However, when students make the choice to wear the shirt and tie, students must ensure that they are wearing a school approved uniform shirt (not a casual white shirt), that it remains neatly tucked in and the tie is worn appropriately.

July and August are the months dedicated to Information Nights and Course Counselling.  Over the last few weeks, we have held the Years 9, 10, 11 and 12 Information Nights.  The number of parents and guardians in attendance demonstrates the interest and commitment there is to supporting the individual learning journeys of students at Mooroolbark College.  We have also begun course counselling, this is a time when the Houses and the Pathways Teams spend a considerable amount of time working with their students to ensure successful future pathways.

Regards,

Winter Concert

Winter Concert

Congratulations to the music students who performed at our Winter Concert, held at the Mooroolbark Community Centre on Monday 14th August.

The audience were treated to some amazing performances from our Concert Bands, Choir, Guitar, Keyboard and Percussion Ensembles, as well as many soloists and small groups.

We have so many talented musicians at the College, and it is wonderful seeing everyone up on stage, enjoying themselves, and sharing their love of music with others.

A very special thank you to everyone who helped make this night such a success, including the P.T.C.A. for providing our interval refreshments, our Stage Crew who did an amazing job keeping the show running smoothly, and of course our dedicated music staff.

Instrumental Music Coordinator

Bats Production

Bats Production

In early August, the culmination of all the rehearsals over five months came to a wonderful conclusion at the Mooroolbark Community Centre with the performances of this year’s College Production of ‘Bats’. Both the audience and the cast enjoyed a funny and memorable, musical parody of everything ‘horror’. There were Frankenstein monsters, angry peasants, Hunchback’s, werewolves, Dracula and spine chilling laughs!

We had a hardworking and talented cast and crew that spanned all year levels. It was great to see a high number of Year 7 & 8 performers in this year’s show. At the other end of the spectrum, we had five Year 12’s who performed in their final Mooroolbark performances. Their contribution, talent and example to their younger cast mates was incredible. We are going to miss them, and we hope, as we had this year; that they will come back and visit or even help out with the College’s next production.

Many staff contributed much time and energy in order for the production to happen. Our fantastic art department for their fine efforts in painting and producing our sets and Mrs Wood for her great costumes. Ms Van Bremen, Mrs Gibbs, Miss Mathieson and Mr Ford for producing all manner of things and Mrs Stratford and Ms. McIntosh for their support. Mr Standing, for assisting in just about everything! Miss Rosendale for her perfect choreography and Mr Van Keulen, Mrs Whitby and the Bats Band for their awesome playing.   And of course, to all of the audience who came to see the play and the parents of our extremely talented cast.

SRC Address

SRC Address

The bench seats are in! Thank you to the Year 12 students who donated their time and effort into helping installing the newest additions to the school grounds. Last week 5, 2-metre bench seats were set up right near the oval, brought with the money the students raised for the Free Dress Day last semester, hosted by the SRC. Great job everyone! Be sure to go down and see them!

We are also looking forward to the beginning of the mural next week! One of our representatives so kindly has taken time and effort into crafting together 4 amazing pieces of Aboriginal artwork, which will be formed into 4 murals for each house. All the materials are brought and ready to go. We are excited for all students and teachers to get a better understanding of Aboriginal artwork, and to help us become more accepting and inclusive with the diversity in our College.

The eighth Annual Carnival Day is just 25 days away! This year the Carnival Day is on the 12th September. It is definitely one of the highlights of the year, and you won’t want to miss it! It includes a range of activities, games and food stalls. The day is for the students and teachers to become one and enjoy the fun.   There will be prizes, plenty to do, see, eat and drink. If any students, teachers or parents, know of any businesses who may be able to donate prizes or even monetary donations, please see one of our SRC Representatives or speak to Miss Cooper in Blue House. Also, if you have any ideas as to what you would like to see this year, feel free to attend a meeting in A1 next Tuesday. We can’t wait for the day and be sure to look out for the posters which will be coming soon!

We would also like to thank all students, teachers and parents who completed the SRC Canteen Survey in Insights. This information will help us further improve the school canteen, and we are working on the ideas suggested. Thank you!

“Life is too short not to celebrate the nice moments!” Have a blessed week everyone, stay safe

Thank you,
Tiani Welch-Phillips, Year 11 Green House SRC Representative

Interschool sports

Interschool sports

It has been a jam packed term of interschool sport! We had our Intermediate basketball teams head out to Dandenong Basketball stadium. It was fantastic to see over 50 students represent the College on the day. Both men’s and women’s A teams were very successful winning several games. Unfortunately, both teams came up short, missing out on progressing to regions by percentage. Mr Zarebski and Mr Keogh did a fantastic job organising the teams and planning training sessions leading up to the day. On the same day, the Intermediate table tennis team competed in the Division competition. Under the watchful eyes of Mr Loh the team put on a tremendous effort. Each team got plenty of wins and showed outstanding sportsmanship throughout.

Following the Intermediates, we have our Year 7 and 8 teams who will be competing in the Winter 2 round robin. Please keep an eye out on the newsfeed to check training times for basketball and badminton.

On Friday of week 5 we have our Year 8 girl’s badminton team competing at the Region finals at Pinks Reserve, Kilsyth. We wish them all the best and look forward to hearing their results.

The last big day on the Term 3 sports calendar is the Division athletics carnival. This will be held at Ringwood athletics track on Friday 8th September. Over the last 3 years the athletics teams is growing and we are looking forward to seeing plenty of students wear the brand new athletic singlets. There will be training sessions for each event leading up to the carnival. Dates and times will be displayed on the Compass newsfeed.

Finally, congratulations to Lateisha Willis who represented Australia at the Oceania Track and Field championships. This was the first time she wore the green and gold in a championship. Lateisha came 2nd in the U/18 100m hurdles. This is an amazing achievement and we wish her all the best in her upcoming summer season.

Pathways News

The past three weeks have been very busy for the Pathways staff and for students in Year 8 through to Year 12.  On Tuesday 1st August our students had the opportunity to attend the Maroondah Career Expo that was held at Box Hill TAFE Lilydale Lakeside campus. From our observations, Mooroolbark College was well represented in student and parent attendance.

On Tuesday 8th August, all Year 12 students attended the Tertiary Information Session at Box Hill Lilydale Lakeside. The students were informed about their opportunities to apply for various tertiary courses and were able to speak with representatives from Universities, TAFE institutions and various private providers.

The last 2 weeks have seen students from Year 8 to 11 take part in course counselling sessions and put in their subject preferences for 2018 via our online program. This process is quite involved and we always try to ensure that the majority of students are satisfied with the final result at course confirmation which will take place towards the end of Term 4.

College Captain

College Captain

Casey Allen Red House Captain

What do you hope to achieve this year in your role?
This year as captain I hope to make the students feel comfortable and feel like they can talk to me if they need help. I also hope to be a good role model for the younger students.

Who is a leader that you admire and why do you admire them?
A leader I admire is Malala Yowafzi, I admire her because she stood up for girls and women’s’ rights. Even after the accident that caused her to relocate to Britain she still fought for women and girls rights in Pakistan, which caused her to receive the Nobel Peace Prize.

What are some of your goals for the future?
I hope to complete my education to a high standard and do well in the career I choose.

Final sentence for readers.
I hope everyone has a good year at school and remembers that if you need any help you can always come up and ask me.
