NATIONAL ASSESSMENT PROGRAM – LITERACY AND NUMERACY (NAPLAN)

NAPLAN is the National Assessment Program for Literacy and Numeracy.  These tests are given each year to students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 and measure their knowledge and skills in literacy and numeracy.  NAPLAN also provides valuable information to teachers about student achievement, which is used to support and enhance the teaching and learning program.  It is essential that all Year 7 and 9 students attend school on Tuesday 14th May to Thursday 16th May. Any student who is absent on the test days will have the opportunity to do their tests on another day.

ANZAC DAY

Our School Captains Jordan Daniels and Bethany Shegog represented the College at Hookey Park in Mooroolbark on Thursday 25th April to commemorate Anzac Day. All our Captains represented the College with pride and dignity. We are very proud of them.

Jordan also gave an address at the Bimbadeen Heights Primary School ANZAC Day Assembly on Wednesday 24th April where he spoke about his reflections on ANZAC Day.  Again he represented the College well.

OPEN NIGHT

Our Open Night was held on Thursday 2nd May.  It was a great opportunity to celebrate the outstanding work being undertaken by our students.  We had large number of prospective students and their parents/guardians attend the evening.  I would like to thank all the staff members for making the evening so successful and the School Council and PTCA members for their support on the evening. Particularly I would like to thank the students who assisted on the evening and represented the College.

COLLEGE ATHLETICS CARNIVAL

I would like to thank Lachie Mann for his organisation of the Athletics Carnival held on Monday 6th May. The day ran smoothly with a large number of students participating. Our College and House Captains were outstanding in supporting their houses and participating in all events. I want to thank all the staff, for their enthusiasm and encouragement of students.

YEAR 9 TASMANIA & YEAR 10 CENTRAL AUSTRALIA TOURS

The Year 9 and 10 students have returned from their Tasmania Tour and Central Australia Camps. I am very grateful for the teachers who committed themselves to ensuring the camps ran smoothly and the students had an outstanding learning experience. It was clear that from the reports I received that the students certainly had an exciting adventure.  Thank you to our camp leaders Mr. Jordan Van Keulen and his team and Mrs. Jodie Tilley, Mrs. Janet Whitby and their teams for their organisation of two wonderful camps.

 YEAR 10 & 11 EXAMS

The Year 10 and 11 students will be sitting their exams from Monday 3rd June to Thursday 13th June and the Unit 3 & 4 students will be sitting the GAT on Wednesday 12th June 2019.  In preparation for their exams, students should be completing at least 2-3 hours of study each night.  It is important that all students take these exams seriously and prepare well.  We expect students to apply themselves and achieve the best possible results.

PUPIL FREE DAY

Reminder that Friday 14th June is a Report Writing day and students are not required at the College on this day.

 CHINA TOUR

Our Sister School Wujiang Senior School will visit Mooroolbark College between 2nd August to 8th August. We are urgently looking for a number of host families to provide accommodation for our lovely guests. It is an opportunity for our students and families to learn about and share with each other our different cultures. For each guest you host, you will receive a $200 reimbursement to cover the living costs.
If you are interested in getting more information, please Contact Miss Tan or Mr Nichol at the College on 9727 8100.

MAY 18TH – POLLING DAY

Mooroolbark College is a polling place for the federal election on Saturday 18th May.  On this day Bimbadeen Heights Primary School will be running a sausage sizzle and Bimbadeen Pre School will be running a cake stall.  This is a wonderful opportunity to support both these two local communities.  There will also be coffee available for purchase on the day.

Captain Profile

Captain Profile

KIMBERLEY BARKWITH  - BLUE HOUSE CAPTAIN

What do you hope to achieve this year in your role?
Throughout 2019, I hope to help others achieve their goals that they set for the year; as well as reach my goals that I have set for 2019.

Who is a leader you admire and why do you admire them?
Someone I admire that encourages me to become a leader is my Mum. Watching her be the person she is today inspires me to do my best and help as many people along the way as possible.

What are some of your goals for the future?
I aim to work hard throughout 2019, providing the best work I possibly can and be the best person I can be for my peers to look up to.  After Year 12, I hope to get into my preferred university courses. This will allow me many options and hopefully increase my capabilities towards becoming a physiotherapist.

Final sentence for readers.

I am super excited to be working alongside the Blue House team. 2019 is going to be a wonderful year and I can’t wait to walk the journey with Mooroolbark College.

Duke Of Ed Wheeltalk experience

Duke Of Ed Wheeltalk experience

On Monday 4 March our 2019 Duke of Edinburgh team were treated to a Wheeltalk session from ‘Disability Sport and Recreation Victoria’.  Our presenter Gary who has spent 31 years in a chair spoke to us about his accident, his life in the chair and how he makes the most of every day, playing as many sports as possible with a positive attitude.  We were then able to experience what it’s like in the chair with some relay races and an amazing game of wheelchair basketball.  We thank Gary and D.S.R.V for this wonderful experience.  It left us with a great sense of gratitude, empathy and mindfulness.

Duke of Ed Camp 1 2019

On Monday 29 April, Duke of Edinburgh 2019 had the first of their two amazing camps to the Cathedral Range State Park.

We were blessed with brilliant weather for our two major hikes over the first 2 days. Leadership, determination, resilience, responsibility and teamwork were seen along with some great singing!  Massive thanks to Mr Jordan Van Keulen who once again set the camp alight. We also want to thank our returning ex-Duke students who came to help out – Lucas Dunkinson, Brad “Turbo” Menheere, Jaymie-Lee Burton and Sharni Webb.  These guys were awesome!

Intermediate Girls Volleyball Region Finals

Intermediate Girls Volleyball Region Finals

On Thursday 28 March, our Intermediate Girls Volleyball team travelled to the State Volleyball Centre to compete in the region finals. The girls played very well on the day showing fantastic teamwork, spirit and determination.  We improved with every game and the opponents got harder with each game.  We won our first game against Koonung SC and narrowly went down (57-52) in three sets in the second game against Brentwood SC. We then faced Kew HS in the third game.  Kew HS has a very strong formal Volleyball program within the school and our girls scored 10 and 11 points against them in the 2 sets we played.  We hadn’t seen another school get more than 5 against them.  A great job from our girls.  Congratulations to Olivia Szalay, Tayla Glynn, Caitlyn Kavanagh, Caitlyn O’Rourke, Li len Par Hlawn Ceu, and Sui Tha Din.  The College is very proud of you all!

Year 9 Volleyball

Year 9 Volleyball

On Tuesday 26 February, our Year 9/10 boys (1 team) and Year 9/10 girls (3 teams!) competed in the District Volleyball competition.  We had a great day with only 2 losses out of 16 games between the 4 teams for the day. One of these losses was when 2 of our teams played each other. Our boys were very close to winning on the day.  They won their first 2 games and lost the final game against Melba College.  Our three girls teams won all their games, with our A team winning through to the next level!  Congratulations girls!

Clean Up Australia Day

Over 100 Mooroolbark College students participated in Clean up Australia Day. All students got their hands dirty and in a single period were able to collect a huge amount of waste. Students were also educated in home group about the impact of plastics on the environment as well as given the opportunity to sign a petition to get recyclable bins in Mooroolbark College. Congratulations to all involved. #SustainableWarriors
