PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Mobile Phone Policy

The Mooroolbark College Council is currently reviewing the Mobile Phone Policy prior to the beginning of 2020.  The College Council has asked the Student Representative Council to seek input from students on their behalf and will also be seeking input from parents and staff.   In essence, the intention of the policy will be to ensure a safe physical and emotional learning and working environment for students and staff. To create an environment which promotes effective and quality teaching and learning, and ensures young people are connected in an appropriate social manner whilst at school.

End of Semester Two

The semester is drawing to a close with assessments now being finalised.  Our Year 10 and 11 students are currently undertaking their end of unit exams. I want to congratulate them on their dedication to their studies and the way they have approached their exams.  Friday 14th June is Report Writing Day and staff are currently preparing to write reports.  Classes do not operate on this day and students are not required at school. The College Office will be closed between 10.00 am and 12.00 pm.

Lilydale District Network - Shared Practice Staff Meetings Lilydale District Network of Schools – working together!

There is a great deal of evidence to suggest that when networks of schools work collaboratively, student achievement is optimised. The Lilydale Network of Schools including both primary and secondary are very pleased to be able to work closely to take the education of our students to the next level. At Mooroolbark College on Wednesday May 15, as part of an ongoing shared practice agenda, our staff along with staff from Yarra Hills SC, Pembroke Primary School, Kilsyth Primary School, Manchester Primary School, Mooroolbark East Primary School and Billanook Primary School staff worked together to explore the value of formative assessment for student learning.  All staff brought along examples of formative assessments which they use in class to evaluate the progress and achievement of all of their students. They also heard from expert teachers who have the latest in evidence based teaching strategies that will ensure our students benefit when the teachers return to the classroom. The opportunity for our teachers to come together and share ideas is also an important part of the shared practice program. We look forward to continuing the ongoing professional learning that engages and inspires our teachers into the future.

College Uniform

Prior to the beginning of Semester 2, many families take the opportunity to restock school uniform requirements.  The only shoes that can be worn are leather (or vinyl) school schools.  Examples of appropriate school shoes can be accessed on Compass under school documentation.

The support of parents/guardians in relation to uniform would be greatly appreciated in delivering a high standard of appearance for students and pride in our College.  School Uniform Policy is determined by College Council and is reviewed on a regular basis

Access to Compass

All parents and guardians are issued with an individual log in for Compass.  This allows you to view your child’s attendance, submission of work and see what is currently happening for your child via the news feed.  If you cannot access compass, please contact the College on 97355644 and one of the College’s ICT Technicians will be able to support you.

CAPTAIN PROFILE

CAPTAIN PROFILE

CAPTAIN PROFILE - RED HOUSE: JACK SCHOFIELD

WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO ACHIEVE THIS YEAR IN YOUR ROLE?
As Red House Captain, Kellie and I would like the continued improvement of better planned and ran activities in home group and create more interactions within and between home groups. I would also love to eliminate all rubbish in the red house area as well as remaining as an approachable person for all year levels.

WHO IS A LEADER THAT YOU ADMIRE AND WHY DO YOU ADMIRE THEM?
I admire my parents, as they have given me the best opportunity in life. They have also lived an amazing life which I am extremely jealous of, with both my parents traveling the world for many years. They have never been given anything but rather have worked hard for everything they have got.

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR GOALS FOR THE FUTURE?
My main goal is to travel. Travel for as long as possible and see as many different places as possible. To do this I will have to work for a few years. I’ll work part time while attending University in a course that I hopefully enjoy.

FINAL SENTENCES FOR READERS
If anyone ever needs to talk, come find me during home group or out in the yard. I hope everyone enjoys their year at school. GO RED HOUSE!

YEAR 11 HOLOCAUST MUSEUM

YEAR 11 HOLOCAUST MUSEUM

The Year 11 History class attended the Jewish Holocaust Museum on Monday.  We toured the museum’s gallery and met David, a 94 year old Holocaust survivor who shared his incredible story.  Our students showed great interest, knowledge and understanding of the events of 1933 - 1945.  The day made a big impression on everyone and we will always remember David’s advice that when you witness terrible acts, one should never remain silent.

PEOPLE AND THE PLANET

PEOPLE AND THE PLANET

Year 10 People and the Planet students were busy on our field trip to the Mornington Peninsula.  We visited Rosebud, Gunnamatta, Cape Schanck and Hastings.  Students collected data on and investigated longshore drift, rips, beach safety, dune stabilisation, the effects of climate change and the importance of mangroves.  It was a great day and we all learnt so much about the coast and how we can develop future strategies to sustain and protect its unique qualities.

FRIED RICE COOKING LESSON IN MANDARIN

FRIED RICE COOKING LESSON IN MANDARIN

Chinese cuisine has always been an important part of the Chinese culture. During Mandarin classes this term, the Year 8 students had the opportunity to make fried rice. The purpose was to help students gain a better understanding of how environment and culture can influence food preferences. Although some students had been to a Chinese restaurant before, for many it was the first time they made fried rice. Students were engaged particularly when they were eating their self-made fried rice.
